How Not to Teach

Monday, March 20th, 2006

Well tonight was the last night of a night class that I can only describe as a complete none event. Twenty weeks that allegedly focused on Creating Fictional Worlds. It said so in the title. The prospectus mentioned world building. It mentioned Fantasy and Science Fiction. What it didn’t mention was that that all the lecturer wanted to do was workshop. He did no preparation other than photocopying the stories in advance. The only taught material was a rehash of the hero’s journey which last time I checked has nothing to do with world building. We also reviewed The Wizard of Earthsea. Again not a thing to do with creating fictional worlds. A complete waste of time and money that thoroughly derailed progress on my novel. Highly not recommended. Don’t waste your time.

I’m not even going to link to the course because that would help their search engine placement. They don’t deserve the help and I’d hate someone to find them because I helped their rankings. Liverpool University needs to wake up and realise that their reputation is at stake when they deliver utter tripe like this. Their writing classes used to have a reputation for excellence. Now their getting a different reputation.

Rant over.
