Writing the Boring Bits

Saturday, October 14th, 2006

Writing the mundane bits of a story seem to be the hardest parts. I used to find avoiding info dumps hard work or dialogue but now it’s the mundane experiences the character goes through I’m finding the hardest parts to write. Trying to strike the right balance of brevity with enough detail that the reader doesn’t feel cheated. I just had to have a character take a long journey by a circuitous route. For what comes after to work there isn’t an opportunity to add some action to spice the journey up. Plus describing lots of places I’ve never been that do exist has a real risk of adding an error. So I’ve kept it short and I’ll have to hope that it doesn’t disappoint anyone reading the story later.
