Nottingham Contemporary

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

I went to Nottingham Contemporary on the second leg of my holiday.  The building is very striking.  The Diane Arbus and Gert and Uwe Tobias exhibitions were both interesting.

What I really liked was the Small Collections Room.  Changing collections in four cabinets with draws filled with art that you can open and discover whats inside.  Des Hughes work in two cabinets was fun. The craftmanship in the micromosaics in another was astonishing.

The fourth cabinet had Symbology by Trevor Paglen which would be a must for Conspiracy X players. It consisted of a collection of fake military patches for US Air Force covert operations with descriptions of the units. There was plenty for the conspiracy theorists but it also had something to say about the War on Terror. The patches also appear in his book I Could Tell You But Then You Would Have to Be Destroyed By Me: Emblems from the Pentagon’s Black World.

Unfortunately I’ve just noticed when writing this that the Small Collections Rooms current collections end tomorrow.  So you’ll either have to be very quick if you want to see them or discover what they put in the draws next…
