Mrs H.'s Knitting Circle Racing Along

Monday, November 19th, 2007

I’ve been belting along with "Mrs H.’s Knitting Circle" today, adding a couple of thousand words to the story. Its got murders, shoot outs, detective work, intrigue, a heist, a confession, a nice cup of tea but no actual knitting. Depending on the final word count I may go back and switch a few sections […]

Mrs H.'s Knitting Circle

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

I was reading the end of "The Steward, the Kriegsherr, his Femme Fatale & her Brother" and the start of "Dirk Dangerous and the Giant Balls of Doom" and I felt there needed to be a bridge between them. It means I won’t be introducing Dirk to the world for at least one more story […]

Vue Lighting Rig #7: Two Spots 45 Degrees From the Side

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Last week’s theatrical lighting rig for Vue, Two Spots Slightly to the Side, placed two lights at steep angles to either side of the actor. This week’s rig is very similar except the lights have moved out so they are now at roughly forty five degrees. As the light now comes from an increasingly lower […]

Vue Lighting Rig #6: Two Spots Slightly to the Side

Monday, November 5th, 2007

This week I’m continuing my series of basic lighting rigs for e-on software’s Vue inspired by theatrical lighting techniques. All the rigs so far have used a single light but this week’s is the first to use two. With two lights there is now light to both sides of the face. There are fewer areas […]

A Few Tweeks to Too Many Ideas

Monday, November 5th, 2007

I’ve fiddled around a bit with this blog today adding a bookmarking widget and cleaning up the tags (or labels as blogger calls them), mostly getting rid of ones that were either duplicates or only had one post attached to them and merging a few of them.

Late Halloween Short Story

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

The scratching noises came from the old hotel’s basesment. Every nerve screemed at him to run. His brain said no. So what if the power had gone off? So what if the landline was out? So what if the car wouldn’t start? Storm winds rattled branches against the windows. He wasn’t afraid. He was the […]

Vue Lighting Rig #5: Halloween Special

Monday, October 29th, 2007

This week I’m taking a break from working through the most common forms of theatrical lighting to bring you a Halloween special. This lighting rig is a popular lighting technique used in theatre and once popular in film and television although now more often seen in parody. A light source shines from below and close […]

The Steward, the Kriegsherr, his Femme Fatale & her Brother: Accepted

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Just heard from Astonishing Adventures Magazine that they’ve accepted "The Steward, the Kriegsherr, his Femme Fatale & her Brother" for issue 2. It’s a sort of sequel to "The Electron Jockey". I’m already 600 words into a sort of sequel to this one with the working title "Dirk Dangerous and the Giant Balls of Doom".

Describing a Character like a Spy

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Last year I wrote a post about describing a character in the style of an M&S advert. I’ve just finished reading the SOE Syllabus which included the a technique for describing a character. The following idea is based on the method taught by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) to agents during the Second World War. […]
