Vue 6 Keeps Getting Better

Monday, May 7th, 2007

I’ve been playing with a rework of an old picture today trying out a variety of Vue 6 features to see if it can be improved. There was a lot of sky in the old picture and using a spectral atmosphere really helps. There was a big expanse of water too. It was rather dull in the old picture so I wanted to see if I could make it more interesting. I tried a procedural terrain with an open ocean fractal for heights but it didn’t give the look I was trying for. In some of the earlier versions of Vue 6 displacement mapping was a problem but I thought I’d give it a go again. I built a texture using the same open ocean fractal for the displacement and transparency components. It didn’t crash Vue so it seems that problems either fixed or a lot less of a problem. It seems to work in test renders but I want to try a full size render before I pass final judgement on making more interesting water this way.
