Thirteen Things Mark likes about Liverpool on the cities 800th Birthday

  1. Architecture – The waterfront, the cathedrals and William Brown Street are often mentioned but there are many more distinctive buildings throughout the city
  2. Music – From the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to a band you may have heard of called the Beatles
  3. Sport – Notably Liverpool and Everton football clubs and the Grand National at Aintree
  4. Visual Arts – From the varied collections in the city galleries to the SuperLambBanana and Turning the Place Over
  5. The night life – Although I’ve not been out clubbing in years
  6. Education – There are the three Universities (the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool Hope University), the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and an assortment of schools and colleges.
  7. The people
  8. Poetry – including famous poets like Roger McGough and Adrian Henri
  9. Eating out – the choice of types of food to eat in Liverpool is excellent and so wide I can’t list even a fraction here
  10. Museums – Liverpool has Merseyside Maritime Museum, World Museum Liverpool, the International Slavery Museum, National Conservation Centre and Sudley House
  11. FACT – A great little cinema
  12. Festivals and Events – from the 800 celebration this year to the capital of culture next year and the various regular festivals there is usually something happening
  13. Did I mention the people?

Fascinating list. I always appreciate the architecture of old churches and federal buildings when I visit new cities.

Have never been to Liverpool.

bernie Friday, August 31st, 2007

Interesting list,
Mine's up at 13 Famous Dogs

cajunvegan Friday, August 31st, 2007

Wow! It sounds like a must-see if I ever make it across the pond.

My TT this week is about the Zombie Jebuses.

MamaLee Thursday, August 30th, 2007

I've never been, but I'll get there one day!

Happy TT!

Starrlight Thursday, August 30th, 2007

I saw Gordon Ramsey Kitchen Nightmare set in Liverpool and he said that it is fast becoming one of the best places to dine out. I'd love to visit with my family sometime.

Elisa Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Obviously I need to visit Liverpool. You have convinced me.
(Okay, I was actually thinking about it before, but now it's officially on the list.)

Samantha Lucas Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Those are wonderful things! Your post really leapt out at me, made me want to go there. Thanks for sharing that. :)

mar Thursday, August 30th, 2007

No Beatles Museum?? :)
happy TT!

Mark Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Tilly - #3 Sport - Liverpool Football Club aka The Reds. I know too many Red and Blues fans to leave either off :-)

The reds I've supported since I was a kid though are Nottingham Forest.

Mama Pajama Thursday, August 30th, 2007

What an interesting post! I must admit that I know very little about Liverpool. Of course I knew a bit b/c of the Beatles. Thanks for visiting my site!

Tilly Greene Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Doesn't Liverpool have the art installation that is an outside wall on a building that spins 360 - I so wanted to see that the last time I was over.

I take it you aren't a footie fan...didn't see the Red's mentioned :-)

Congrats on 800!

Xakara Thursday, August 30th, 2007

It's sounds great. I love virtual travel through someone else's enthusiastic sharing. :)

Happy Thursday

katherine. Thursday, August 30th, 2007

sounds like a wonderful place...

pussreboots Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Sounds like a lovely city. Happy TT.

kat Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Great list! I would love to see Liverpool sometime...

Happy TT!

Nancy J. Bond Thursday, August 30th, 2007

It sounds absolutely lovely. My daughter spent a day in Liverpool while living in Dublin for a couple of years, and thought it beautiful.

Lori Thursday, August 30th, 2007

It sounds like a wonderful place...I am going to go there some day:)

Janet Thursday, August 30th, 2007

I've always wanted to visit Liverpool, see where the Beatles were from! What's your favorite food native to Liverpool? Love the accent there!

The Gal Herself Thursday, August 30th, 2007

All I know of Liverpool I've learned from reading about the Beatles. In the 1940s, when they were growing up, it sounded pretty dismal. I guess WWII really took a toll there. So nice to learn that it's really lovely! And Happy 800th.

Susan Helene Gottfried Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Liverpool is 800 years old?? Really? That's cool.

yh Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

I've never been to Liverpool... I've only checked out London (a little), Leicester, a little of York, a teeny bit of Edinburgh, and Inverness... (I know the last two are in Scotland) :) I really want to go back and check out some more of the UK :)

Ed Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Great TT. Liverpool sounds like a fascinating place to be.

Sandee (Comedy +) Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

What a wonderful place Liverpool must be. Happy Birthday again. Have a great TT. :)

Kota Bear Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Awesome T13!

I will have to hit Liverpool when I tour Europe.... Okay, so it will be a while, BUT I WILL TOUR Europe! This is the second T13 I've read today that has renewed my desire to travel abroad this week!

damozel Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

And, of course, those of us old enough might still cherish their old "Mersey Beat" records. (I'm not even going to MENTION the Beatles, because they go without saying, right?)

Nicholas Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Hmmmm. Rather embarrassing. I have spent almost all of my life in England but have never been to Liverpool (or Manchester, or Sheffield, or Glasgow). Still, many happy returns to the city that was once the second city of the Empire.

Claire Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

I missed the fireworks last night, they looked great.

Looking forward to next year and all the parties :)

Tink Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Never been in Liverpool (yet)! Ah, all those places I still want to go... Liverpool sounds good!
My TT lists 13 activities / sports I did or still do.

Kim Knox Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Great list! But then I mightbe *slightly* biased... hehe
